James grew up locally on a small farm outside of State College near Port Matilda. He attended, and loved, the State College Friends school during its early years when it was located below the Friends Meeting house. He graduated from Bald Eagle Area High School which imparted a lasting appreciation for hunting, fishing, football, and country/bluegrass music. Following high school, he worked on a ranch/ nature preserve run by The Nature Conservancy in Montana. Afterwards, he attended Earlham college, a small Quaker college in Indiana, and earned a degree in biology. As part of this experience, he traveled to Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania where he studied community development and sustainability. He moved to Los Angeles for three years where he was assistant director at Performing Arts Studio West, a program for developmentally disabled adults. He then was recruited for and accepted a job at Immersive Media, which was contracted by Google Maps to collect streetview and point of interest 360º imagery in 18 different US cities. This provided a unique experience of real estate development trends throughout the United States.  He has also travelled extensively throughout the world, including Chile, Peru, England, Austria, and Costa Rica and his appreciation for culture and architecture has been greatly shaped by this experience and contributed to his fluency in Spanish.

He's now back in Happy Valley where in addition to real estate work with KW he is partner of Ardrey Lane Investments, a small rental property acquisition and management business. He also works "per diem" with the Skills group where he's involved with fostering community integration with a group of developmentally disabled individuals. He's exploring the idea of starting a nonprofit organization that would serve the needs of this population and the greater community via a program focused on sustainable agriculture and the arts. He was recently appointed to serve on the board of Foxdale Village and is particularly interested in strategic planning and new development models for retirement communities.

In his spare time, he enjoys backpacking, fishing,  bicycling (strongly supports bike and walk friendly development), volleyball, photography, and good coffee and craft brews. He is a big fan of PSU football AND academics and a somewhat sheepish fan of the Philadelphia Eagles.
